Installation

Note that the installation requires that you have a valid Brown sign in (the same User/pass for Canvas) and that you create a MathWorks account (more on that later). If these steps are too complex for you to follow, you can schedule a free appointment at Brown’s CIT center (115 Waterman, located right next to the science library). They will install it for you, although you will have to stay there for the entire installation, which may be a few hours.

Here are the steps for installing this wonderful piece of software yourself:

1. Visit to the Brown software page: https://www.brown.edu/information-technology/software and click on “Matlab all supported versions”

2. Click on the red button that says “Log in Required” on the top right of the page.

3. Sign in using your Canvas information

4. Click on the top red button reading “Get Matlab from The Mathworks.” This will redirect you to the IT’s directions on installing matlab https://ithelp.brown.edu/kb/articles/411-matlab-designated-computer-installation

5. Go to http://www.mathworks.com and create an account by clicking “Log in” on the top right. On the next page, click on the link underneath the log in that reads “Create an account.” If you already have a mathworks account from another class, skip to step 9

6. Fill out the fields for email address, country, usage (write “Student use”) an age. An example is shown below. Click “create.”
7. Go to your email, open the email from mathworks (the sender is service@mathworks.com) and click the blue “verify your email” button. 8. Finish your profile with your information; skip the last box that says “Associate Your Account to a License”

9. Find the blue “Associate Licenses” button under the box that says “Associate with a License.” If you already had a Matlab account or if you cannot find this button, go to “Log in” on the top right, then “My Account,”  “View My Licenses”  “Associate License”

10. Enter your activation key (which you can get from signing in on this link http://software.brown.edu/dist/sw/campus/matlab/student_tah_activation.html

11. Download matlab! This download takes hours so be patient!

12. If you don’t have Java updated, matlab might ask for a newer version. If you accidentally close the prompt window, Java updates are here: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html

13. Still having issues with installation? Schedule an appointment at the CIT center, or email help@brown.edu

Happy Matlab-ing!

matlab is a language for math, computation, and algorithm development. It’s a very powerful tool for visualization, optimization, and differential equations. Mupad comes with matlab and does NOT need to be installed separately; when you install matlab, Mupad is already included in the package. Symbolic Math Toolbox™ provides functions for solving, plotting, and manipulating symbolic math equations. You can create, run, and share symbolic math code using the matlab® Live Editor. Although individual use of the programs usually runs upwards of $500 (with an additional $30-45 relicensing fee every year), students at Brown get this Software for FREE!
