Abstract: Numerical simulation has now become an integral part of the engineering design. Critical design decisions are routinely made based on the simulation results and conclusions. The reliability of the numerical computations is therefore vitally important in the decision-making of engineering design. A posteriori error estimation of the numerical solution plays a central role in the verification of the reliability of the numerical simulation and in the construction of the adaptive computational algorithms to effectively control the approximation error. We shall examine different error estimators and address the issue of their practical applications.
